How to make a marathon sign

  1. Pick the words

Choose a line from the list or type your own in the “Sign text” box. Keep it to 3 to 8 words so runners can read it while they pass.

  2. Make it yours

Add your runner's name, pick a color set and a paper size. The text resizes itself to fill the sign, as big as it can go.

  3. Print or download

“Print sign” prints it in landscape with no margins. “Download PNG” saves a 150 DPI image you can print at a shop or share on your phone.

Tips for a sign runners can actually read

A marathon sign has about two seconds to work, because that's how long a runner can see it at race pace. Three things make the most difference:

  • Big letters, few words. Letters about 4 inches tall are readable from across a road; on poster board that means one short line or two.
  • High contrast. Black on neon yellow, or white on hot pink or royal blue, stays readable in sun and shade. Light colors on white disappear.
  • Put the name first. Runners look for their own name. “GO SARAH!” in huge letters beats a clever joke they can't finish reading.

FAQ

What should I write on a marathon sign?

Short and readable from far away works best: 3 to 8 words. Runners see your sign for about two seconds, so a funny line or the runner's name in big letters beats a long joke. Pick one from the list on this page or type your own.

What size should a marathon sign be?

Poster board (22 × 28 inches) is the most common size for race-day signs and is readable from across the road. A Letter or A4 sheet works if you're standing close to the course or want something light to carry.

How do I print a sign bigger than my printer paper?

Download the PNG at Poster board size and take it to a print shop or an office store; they print poster sizes from a file. At home, print on Letter or Tabloid paper and glue the sheet onto poster board.

Is my sign uploaded anywhere?

No. The sign is drawn in your browser, and the PNG is created on your device. Nothing you type is sent to a server.

Can I use these sign ideas for a half marathon or a 5K?

Yes. Most of the lines work for any race; the half marathon list has a few made for 13.1.
