Why does ChatGPT use so many em dashes?

The em dash “—” is perfectly good punctuation, and good writers use it. The trouble is how often AI uses it: three or four in a paragraph, and readers start thinking “a bot wrote this”. Most people can't even type it on a keyboard, so it stands out even more. That matters when you're sending a cover letter, posting on LinkedIn or writing to a client.

Smarter than find-and-replace

Most tools turn every em dash into a comma, and the sentence often ends up meaning something else. This one looks at what each dash is doing first, then picks the punctuation:

How to stop ChatGPT from adding em dashes

Since November 2025, ChatGPT follows a “no em dashes” rule if you put it in your custom instructions (TechCrunch). Without the instruction it still uses them. Open Settings → Personalization → Custom instructions and add this line:

Custom instruction
Never use em dashes (—) or en dashes (–) in your replies. Use commas, periods, colons or parentheses instead.

It still slips now and then, so paste the result above for a final pass.

What it won't do

  • It can't promise to fool AI detectors. Em dashes are one tell among many; removing them doesn't make text “human”.
  • It doesn't rewrite your sentences. Only the punctuation changes; your words and tone stay the same.
  • It sometimes picks the wrong mark. A pair of dashes around a “that” clause, for example, reads a little stiff as commas. Click the highlight and choose Remove.

FAQ

Will removing em dashes make my text pass AI detectors?

There's no guarantee. Em dashes are one obvious tell, but detectors also look at word choice and sentence patterns. This tool only makes the punctuation read naturally.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No. Everything happens in your browser, and the text is gone when you close the page.

Does it change en dashes and hyphens?

En dashes used like em dashes are replaced by default, while ranges such as 2019–2024 stay as they are. Hyphens inside words, like well-known, are never touched.

Can I keep some of the dashes?

Yes. Click the highlight and choose “Keep the dash”.
